Green tea powder, or matcha, has been known for thousands of years. It is valued both for its unique, slightly sweetish taste and a variety of beneficial properties. Although until now it was known mainly in Asia, today it is also gaining popularity in Europe. Find out why you should start drinking matcha.
Matcha is rich in antioxidants. One cup of matcha delivers 137 times more antioxidants than regular green tea! Why are they so important? Antioxidants are excellent at fighting free radicals, which are responsible for rapid aging of the body. Antioxidants not only have a positive effect on our appearance, but also on the functioning of the entire body. Thanks to them the risk of heart diseases, diabetes and hypertension decreases. It is also worth knowing that matcha has a sinful anticancer effect.
What distinguishes matcha?
Matcha is endowed with an intense green color, sweet taste and unusual aroma. The process of its production is very time-consuming, but it is thanks to this process that it gains such valuable antioxidant properties.
It is produced from the leaves of shrubs, which are protected from sunlight for two to three weeks before harvesting. This slows down their growth and gives the plant time to produce its valuable compounds. The leaves are then harvested, dried and ground into dust.
Other beneficial properties of matcha
Matcha, besides being high in antioxidants, also contains L-theanines. This is a non-protein amino acid that helps put the brain to work hard while achieving a relaxed state. Thus, it increases the level of concentration, memorization and maintaining mental clarity without the unpleasant effect of irritability, as is the case with caffeine.
Matcha and weight loss
Green tea powder has also been shown to have slimming effects. This is due to the compound epigallocatechin gallate, which speeds up metabolism, helps burn fat and has a positive effect on nutrient absorption. What is more, thanks to the mild stimulating properties of matcha, it favourably influences the undertaking of physical activity.
How to prepare matcha?
You can add the powdered tea to yoghurt, smoothies, shakes and also add it to baked goods such as cakes, pies and other desserts. You can also use it to prepare matcha latte, which is very popular lately.
